How It All Started

Discover Skåne! is unique in that it is founded, owned and operated entirely by the private sector. While we do have partners who are public sector, the story behind the Discover Skåne! starts with two entrepreneurs who met one day and discovered they had similar dreams. Their dream was to be able to travel the countryside and have an easy way to discover all the wonderous and various things that the countryside has to offer. They had no interest in visiting the overcrowded popular places that you read about everywhere. They wanted to find the real local culture and nature, and they have therefore funded the initial Discover Skåne! entirely out of their own pockets, without influence from outside commercial interests.

Initially they set off to build a system to make it easier for overlanders, as they were both overlanders, to find places to camp on private land and for landowners to be able to get income from overlander camping.

As they continued on their journey of discovery of the tourim industry in Sweden, they realized that their system would not be economically viable, as once you have parked your overlander, there is no information on what to do or experience nearby. There was little or no incentive for overlanders to travel to the Swedish country side.

They started looking at adding other places and points of interest to their system. As the system grew in bredth, they found it increasingly difficult to find the information they were looking for. Out of frustration, they decided to build a national database for the Swedish tourism industry. At last they would have all the information they were looking for.

But even if they had all the information at their fingertips, it is an immense amount of information to enter, and they still had to get it in the hands of the traveller.

Between them having travelled Route 66, The North Coast 500, toured Icland, Australia, and many more places the idea came to create a route in their native Skåne. And the Discover Skåne! is born.

The point of the route is not to go from attraction to attraction. The purpose of the route is to provide the traveller a route that brings them close to various destinations, but the travellers can choose for themselves which places they would like to visit. At the same time, the route follows exciting roads, goes past beautiful vistas, and driving the route itself is an experience not to be missed.

The Route

We prefer to stay on smaller country roads, taking our timet o enjoy the scenery. We try to avoid the conjestion of major metropolitain areas and overcrowded top 10 tourist traps. We aim to enjoy the road travelled as much as we enjoy the stops. We hope that you do as well, and that is the goal of the route that we have prepared for you

When we planned the route we looked for roads that were a joy to travel along. We avoided major transportation arteries such as motorways and major roads.

Planning your journey
Trip planning

The route does not go from destination to destination. We have chosen to let you choose which places inspire you to visit, and we have provided you with a route that will allow you to take shorrt and simple offshoots throughout your travel around Skåne to places that interest you.

When we travel the route, we are constantly finding new places to visit and things to see. We are proud to provide you with the same opportunity to experience Skåne as we have.

We honestly believe that Skåne has something to offer you 365 days a year. Every 4 years, that number goes up to 366 days!

The winter in Skåne offers an entirely new experience. Be aware that some parts of the route may be impassable in the winter time depending on weather. We did not plan the route to be passable at all times, knowing that at times you will have to find an alternate route. Be assured though, that Skåne will still offer you a fantastic experience.

The Road Ahead

There's an app for that

Is There an App For That?

It seems that every single place needs their own app these days. With an extensive background in software developmnet, we disagree with that statement. The future of apps is to have a single app that has all the information you need in one place.

And we are proud to tell you that we are currently working on such an app; an app where the information  delivered to you is not driven by the size of the marketing budget of the places it holds. We feel that places that are free to the public, or have little or no finances to market themselves deserve to be seen and visited by you as much as those who can afford to spread their message.

We are writing code as fast as we can, and we expect to launch the app on both Android and iOS platforms by spring 2025.

Themed tours

Traditional Skåne church

Themed tours are a favorite request from many travellers. We are planning on implemented self-guided tours, with suggested places to visit along the route.

Skåne offers the possibility of a myriad of themed tours. We see Scanian food (Skånsk mad), Vikings, churches, and a number of other tours in the future.

Our members will be the first to find out when we launch our tours, and will get the chance to be beta testes of the tours.
